> Madonna ruined pop music for women - by Fiona McCade

Excerpts:

Published Date: 02 June 2011
By Fiona McCade

Madonna used shock-porn to make us notice her, perhaps because she knew her talent and looks alone could never hold our attention.

She stripped off, simulated sex acts and canoodled with a half-naked Christ figure.

The music took a back seat to what Madonna was doing with her body. The books, videos and stage shows were what made her famous. The hardcore sexualisation of female pop artists had started.

And it goes on, although it takes a brave record-industry executive to point it out. Luckily, Richard Russell of XL Records is a brave man. This week he said that the "faux porn" exhibited by some artists' performances makes him feel "queasy".

"It's just so boring, crass and unoriginal," he added, before mentioning that as far as his own artist, Adele, is concerned: "The whole message is that it's just really good music …There are no gimmicks, no selling of sexuality …What a great thing, how amazing."

And how unusual, because thanks to Madonna and her ilk, it's almost impossible for a girl to make music these days without being forced to get her kit off.

....Even if you're perceived as being a powerful woman in the music industry, it appears your body is still up for scrutiny.

It's not fair, is it? Nobody ever asks Will.i.am to strut his stuff in a thong, but Fergie is expected to gyrate like a pole-dancer on poppers.

And that's because Madonna not only sold her image, she sold a lot of impressionable young women the myth that looking like a tart in a brothel window is somehow a feminist statement. So now we have Gaga, Britney and Christina all being desperately outrageous, and Rihanna cavorting around in skimpy bondage gear, singing: "Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me," while offstage she has been the victim of domestic violence. So much for liberation.

Sadly, until female artistes free themselves from Madonna's legacy of sleazy sex and shock-porn, the Kate Bushes, Annie Lennoxes or Suzanne Vegas of the future will find it harder than ever to break through - and to keep their clothes on while they're doing it.

Charity/ Malawi

Kid> Madonna's Malawi Orphan Scheme Facing Money Crisis

A program in Malawi which helps feed orphaned children is facing a financial crisis after Madonna's charity cut funding, according to a U.K. report.

The pop superstar, who has adopted two children from the African nation, helped set up an organisation called Raising Malawi to aid residents of the poverty-stricken nation.

The charity was thrown into chaos earlier this year (11) when plans to build a girls' school collapsed amid allegations of financial mismanagement, prompting Madonna to dissolve the foundation's board of directors.

The head of a charity scheme in Malawi called Consol Homes Orphan Care, which feeds more than 24,000 children across the country, has now claimed the program is in jeopardy after money from Raising Malawi was stopped.

Elicy Chapomba, co-founder and head of operations at Consol, tells Britain's The Times, "Since July last year, no money has been sent and we have resorted to borrowing from the banks."

Rip Offs/ Unoriginal

Madonna rips off other peopleMentions Madonna (as well it should, since Madonna spent over TEN YEARS of her career stealing Monroe's hair style, fashions, etc)

> Marilyn Monroe Wannabes

Years ago, when putting together a "Madonna Rips Off" photo gallery at the old anti site, I noticed that Madonna's early 1980s black and white "Island" magazine cover was a rip off of a classic Greta Garbo photo. Since that time, other people have noticed; here's another example (from a Madonna fan site):

> Madonna book by Knapp

...Here are some extra details about the book:

The preface is written by Jeremy Ayres (He has written for 'Interview' magazine, and he wrote several hits for the 'B52s' and 'REM').

The introduction is written by Matthew Rettenmund (author of 'Encyclopedia Madonnica' book / 'Popstar!' magazine Editor-in-Chief / 'Boy Culture' Founder/Blogger).

Curtis Knapp gave lot of details about his first meeting with Madonna, and how and where the shoot took place. The Greta Garbo picture below was the first inspiration proposed (and accepted) by Madonna for the photoshoot.

Lady GagaRemember those barfy articles we used to see all the time from the late 1980s up until around 2005, where business journalists and professors used to go on and on about what an alleged savvy business woman and marketer Madonna is? Now they're writing that same kind of tripe about Lady Gaga, so this is a nice change of pace. Here's an example:

..."On a shoot in Ireland we were shooting for 72 hours without a break, and I had a bleeding eye by the end,' Ms. Guinness said. 'David has done that to me quite a few times. I've been in a tank of water going up and down for 11 hours. He's got it in his mind, whatever it is, and you know he's going to get there by the end.'

Unless, that is, he does not.

When, in the middle of a telephone call from Madonna, the singer began haranguing him about a video the two were planning, Mr. LaChapelle suddenly took the mobile phone he was holding away from his ear and snapped it shut.

"My agent was shocked," he said. "'Did you just hang up on Madonna?' It was a pivotal moment in my life, because it was the first time I said I don't want to do this anymore."

It was liberating, he added, "to think that I didn't have to work for pop stars or magazines anymore, and that I would never have to shoot the latest video by Britney Spears again."

by Nancy Dillion, May 7, 2011

The feds are stepping up their criminal probe of Madonna's beloved Kabbalah Centre.

New York investigators subpoenaed documents from the Los Angeles-based spiritual organization in the last 10 days amid allegations its founding family treated the nonprofit like a personal piggy bank, sources told the Daily News.

The family, led by Philip and Karen Berg, has controlled the celeb-friendly outpost of Jewish mysticism for decades.

....Manhattan federal prosecutors, who have convened a grand jury, also have contacted Raising Malawi.

"We're actively cooperating with any requests for information related to Raising Malawi," said Trevor Neilson, the Global Philanthropy Group consultant Madonna hired to restructure her charity.

....The investigation, which began last year, reportedly is zeroing in on off-the-books expenditures by the Berg family, sources said.

"I recently uncovered instances of income tax fraud . . . instances which could bankrupt several of the directors involved," wrote former Chief Financial Officer Nicholas Vakkur in an August 2010 email obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

"I have little choice but to cooperate with the IRS and bring down the Kabbalah Centre."

Lady Gaga> Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills won't play tracks by Lady Gaga competitors during showcase warm-up at Big Weekend

May 10 2011 Bev Lyons

RADIO One DJ Scott Mills is so scared about upsetting Lady Gaga that he won't play songs by Rihanna, Madonna and maybe even Katy Perry at their Big Weekend.

> Lady GaGa producer slams Madonna comparisons (more links like this farther below)

Despite the fact that Gaga is more a clone of theatrical, eccentric rock and pop performers of the 1970s and early 1980s, such as Elton John, Dale Bozzio, Grace Jones, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, and KISS, people (usually Madonna fans) desperately keep nit picking each and every new Gaga song and video to find "Madonna rip offs" where none (or very little) exist.

Such is the case with Gaga's latest music video and song, "Judas."

Despite the fact "Judas" sounds nothing like any Madonna song, and that it contains motorcycles and a guy wearing a crown of thorns (which are elements and props Madonna videos never contained especially during her height of sacrilege - the 1980s), journalists and Madonna fans continue complaining that "Judas" is a Madonna rip off.

Previously, Gaga's "Born This Way" was accused of being a rip off of the Madonna 1989 song "Express Yourself" song... which itself was a rip off of a 1970s song by Charles Wright.

But do Madonna fans care that Madonna ripped off numerous singers, actors, and others through her career? No.

For some reason, there's a double standard where fans and writers look the other way regarding Madonna's unoriginality, but they attack Gaga for being unoriginal.

I think the public and the media are just so accustomed to Madonna being the most famous female pop singer from the 1980s (due to her over exposure by the media) that they have this knee-jerk reaction to compare whomever the most famous latest female performer is to Madonna, even though many times, such comparisons may not be valid.

If Katy Perry were the premiere popular female singer right now, the Madonna fans and media would be doing this 'excessive Madonna comparison' shtick to Perry instead of to Gaga.

I generally do not see people picking apart each and every new Katy Perry song or video looking for Madonna rip offs. (Ironically, I usually see people expecting to find Gaga rip offs in Perry videos.)

If Lady Gaga is the only female performer you're picking apart trying to find Madonna rip offs, you might want to consider that you're totally over reacting and over-reaching - and maybe you're wrong.

> Gaga: I didn't copy Madonna

> Lady Gaga producer hits out at Madonna comparisons

Dan Martin
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 5 May 2011
Lady Gaga's producer White Shadow has slammed comparisons that her track Born This Way is influenced by Madonna's classic Express Yourself.

After the wave of pre-publicity for the pop megastar's comeback single, she was met with widespread criticism that the song drew heavily on the 1989 hit, with the words Express Yourself even trending on Twitter after its release. Gaga herself rubbished the claims in an interview with NME, at one point being moved to tears at the suggestion.

Now the DJ, who is credited as a producer on the track, has reacted with anger rather than tears in an interview that has emerged on Gaganews.com. He said: "I think it was BS to be honest. I guess there are a hundred songs that you could put a pitchshift and a BPM change and loop and make them sound like anything. In addition, there are five songs on the radio right now that have the exact same chords and progression."

White Shadow went on to suggest that people are singling out Gaga for unfair criticism. "Actually there are five songs out there that are exactly the same song, on the radio at the same time. Right now. Why doesn't anyone ever bring that up? That's a f***ing felony."

And while stopping short of calling out any of those five songs by name, he claimed that Gaga was the one being copied more than the other way round. "How many people have been copying Gaga since she came out? Oh, I have the answer: everyone. Have you seen all the lightning bolts painted on faces [which was actually done by David Bowie first, in the 1970s], or the one hand eye cover-ups during photos?

"How about the fact that there was barely any dance music on the radio until Just Dance came out? Come on m*****f***ers, let's keep it real here. If we are going to talk about who is chasing who, I think we all know the answer to that."

Sister of Madonna’s late ex-manager [Caresse Henry] blames star, Kabbalah for suicide

It’s been one year since Madonna’s former personal manager, Caresse Henry, shot herself to death in an Irvine, Calif., apartment — allegedly still devastated over being discarded by the superstar in 2004, after spending 13 years as one of her closest confidantes.

Now, as allegations of suspicious activities swirl around Madonna’s charities and questions are raised about her ties to the New Age Kabbalah movement, Henry’s sister, Yvette Dobbie, is speaking publicly for the first time. And she is charging that Madonna and her connection to Kabbalah are to blame for Henry’s death on March 31, 2010 at the age of 44.

> Madonna Hires PR Help for Next Image Makeover

By Tonya Garcia

Madonna has run into some major problems with her charitable organization Raising Malawi, and she’s brought in some big-time PR help to fix them.

Madge’s organization, which works to help children affected by AIDS, was meant to open a school in the African nation, but is now facing accusations that £2.4million intended for the effort has been wasted.

[Madonna has] ... hired “The Masters of Disasters,” publicists Mark Fabiani and Chris Lehane, to help turn around the organization’s image.

According to the Mail, the Masters are being paid £18,000 a month (about $29,000).

In addition to waste associated with the Raising Malawi Girls’ Academy, the charity has been hit with a number of lawsuits from employees.

> Madonna axes Kabbalah chief from Malawi... and then calls in PR 'masters of disasters'

Madonna took the decision after the charity's million flagship project “the Raising Malawi Girls" Academy was abandoned last week following an audit which discovered £2.4million ($3.8 milion) had been frittered away by staff on golf memberships and chauffeur-driven cars.

And she has called in PR gurus Fabiani and Lehane -dubbed "The Masters of Disasters" to help her rebuild the charity's image.

....The Mail on Sunday has learned that Madonna has also hired a team of advisers after being hit by a string of lawsuits from former Raising Malawi employees and criticism over the charity's handling of the Girls' Academy project.

She drafted in Mark Fabiani and Chris Lehane, who earned their 'Masters of Disasters' sobriquet for their damage-control PR work when they worked for Bill Clinton in the White House.

MADONNA’S education charity in Malawi is being investigated by the FBI, it was reported yesterday.

Agents in Los Angeles are checking allegations of “irregularities and suspicious activity” at the star’s Success for Kids charity, it was claimed in the US.

The charity has raised more than £20.4million since 2001 and claims to have helped 60,000 youngsters in seven countries.

Madonna’s representatives refused to comment.

The FBI probe is the latest blow to the singer after reports that £2.3million raised to open a girls’ school in Malawi, which was never built, has gone missing.

Madonna's high-profile charity in Malawi has collapsed, amid allegations of lavish spending on cars, salaries and a golf course membership, and $3.8 million spent on a girls' school that won't be built, The New York Times reported.

> Madonna sued by charity workers over scrapped Malawi school

> Malawi charity workers sue Madonna over payments

Eight workers at Madonna's Malawi charity are suing the pop star for unfair dismissal and non-payment of their benefits, their lawyer said on Sunday.

The board of the charity, Raising Malawi, was sacked after abandoning plans to build a state of the art girls' school just outside the capital Lilongwe due to mismanagement, the New York Times newspaper reported on Saturday.

Madonna, who has adopted two children from Malawi, lent $11 million to the organization and is now on the board.

The workers' lawyer, Mzondi Chirambo, said Madonna had 14 days to respond to their concerns.

"Their employment was terminated by the trustees of Raising Malawi Academy for Girls ostensibly following the change of plan not to build the school as planned," Chirambo said.

"My clients are also being forced to sign a discriminatory termination agreement before they are paid their benefits."

Chirambo said one of the workers he represented was the chief executive of the school, some taught Jewish Kabbalah mysticism while the others were connected to the school project.

The recent controversy over Madonna's involvement with education in Malawi is an example of why celebrities should stay away from development work, says Canadian philanthropist Stephen Lewis.

Lewis, the former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa and board chair of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, was commenting on the pop singer's cancellation of plans for an all-girls school in the African country. The decision has left one Malawian community feeling that it was manipulated by a wealthy star.

"I think fundamentally that celebrities should stay out of development," Lewis said in an interview with CBC's Q cultural affairs show on Thursday.

"They don't know enough about it. They don't know how it works. They should leave it to the organizations who have some knowledge of both working with government and with communities on the ground," he said from New York.

Stephen Lewis says celebrities can be effective in focusing attention on lesser-known causes. Stephen Lewis says celebrities can be effective in focusing attention on lesser-known causes.

Adrian Wyld/Canadian PressPeople in a village near Lilongwe, Malawi's capital, have told reporters they felt betrayed after Madonna abandoned plans to build a $15-million school there.

"They are angry because one: they were forced off that land and there was a protracted fight about compensation," Reuters reporter Mabvuto Banda told CBC.

"They were convinced that if Madonna built a school, their lives would improve as well because of the economic benefits the school would bring them... They're so disappointed because [for] two years they wasted their time and energy."

Banda says the people believe they've been manipulated by a star who wanted to look good in the media and raise money for her charity.

Lady Gaga

Lady GagaI agree with most of this editorial:

> THEN That's What They Called Music! Volume 30 (March 2009)

by Nathan Rabin March 29, 2011

Though she’s no less a purveyor of pure pop and a NOW That’s What I Call Music! poster girl, Lady Gaga is the anti-Katy Perry.

....Gaga’s sexuality-as-Dadaist provocation goes much further than Madonna’s.

For all of Madonna’s boundary-pushing, she nevertheless molded herself into images heterosexual men find irresistible. You like Marilyn Monroe, eh? Then you’ll love Madonna-as-Marilyn in the “Material Girl” video!

Fellini-style sexy Italian sacrilege more your style? Then check out Madonna making out with a black saint in the “Like A Prayer” video.

Into seeing little boys ogle scantily-clad women at peep shows? Then feast on the ultra-creepy “Open Your Heart.”

But Madonna couldn’t make enough music videos to satisfy the sexual appetites of everyone, so she called up photographer Steven Meisel and they made a lovely coffee table book devoted to exploring every legal fetish in existence. That may have been the biggest mistake of Madonna’s career.

Madonna’s Sex book almost instantly negated her sense of mystery through over-saturation. Where do you go after releasing a dirty book of yourself indulging every possible legal sexual fantasy?

There’s something intriguingly unknowable, however, about Gaga. She’s cultivated and maintained an aura of mystery in a violently invasive media world that promises no secrets and sordid revelations on the hour.

Where Perry and Madonna use sexuality as a foolproof marketing hook, Gaga’s sometimes-aggressive, sometimes-esoteric sexuality feels more like some strange sort of post modern performance-art piece only she understands.

Gaga is so complicated and textually rich—as they used to say back in college—that the University Of South Carolina actually teaches a class in "Lady Gaga and the sociology of fame."

....In an age when nothing’s shocking, Gaga still manages to shock. That’s an impressive achievement in itself.

Slams and Put Downs> Rossi slams Madonna, Spice Girls, Kylie

By Mayer Nissim, Senior Entertainment Reporter

Francis Rossi has suggested that Madonna, Kylie Minogue and the Spice Girls are not musically talented.

The Status Quo frontman told Metro that these artists had used the power of the music industry to become successful.

Rossi said: "Most of the big stars since the 1950s haven't really been that great. Look at Madonna - she can't sing but she can make a decent record. Her first one, they had to slow her voice down and speed it up. She used the system really well.

> 10 Year time capsule: Madonna inspires Tarantino

In 2001, Madonna needed to prove she could still shock the world. After all, she was no longer a material girl: She was a 43-year-old material woman, married to a British director and with a couple of kids to call her own (or other, equally ridiculous names).

And as Baby Jane and Norma Desmond knew, there's nothing punk rock about a former star aging bitterly in her giant mansion.

(Does the entry for Melinda Gates include the phrase "wife of"? It does not.)

Where's Madonna? Maybe she doesn't work as hard on charity or international concerns as Ashley Judd or Angelina Jolie, but goodness gracious, still. Is Tina mad at her for something? The London singer opened up about her private life in a new TV programme called Lily Allen: From Riches To Rags. It is set to air on Channel 4 next Tuesday (March 15) at 10pm (GMT).

Speaking about whether she'd consider still being a popstar in her fifties, the Mirror reports Allen as answering: "My idea of hell would be doing this in 25 years time."

She added: "I don't want to be like Madonna, look at her, she's mental. No offence but that is not what drives me. I want to get married and have kids and make sandwiches cutting the crusts off."

Slams and Put Downs> Piers Morgan calls Madonna 'annoying'... nation nods approval

by Candy Bellinger, Mar 4th 2011

Ordinarily we find Piers Morgan and his massive ego a tad irritating but today we've found ourselves agreeing with the talk show host.

During an interview on Conan, Piers discussed his decision to ban Queen of Pop Madonna from his CNN show... simply because she's "annoying".

Having described her faux British accent as "terrible", Piers declared: "She's just so bloody annoying, isn't she? I think I've got the pulse of the nation [by banning her]."

Since news of her ban broke, Madge has reportedly put out a statement saying: "Madonna has never heard of Piers Morgan," despite the fact that Piers claims to have known her for 25 years.

And he spilled the beans on their subsequent awkward encounter at the Vanity Fair Oscars bash last weekend.

"This moment came at the Vanity Fair party where, in Madonna walks wearing clothes befitting a 17-year-old... it was just really awkward."

He added: "I just caught her eye... Of course she wasn't able to recognise me because she's already stated that she doesn't know who I am.

"So we had this kind of stand-off where I was going, 'You're banned' and she was looking at me going, 'I'm pretending not to know who you are'... She's ghastly."

Piers... for once, we would tend to agree.

> Piers Morgan: 'Madonna is annoying'

Piers Morgan has insisted that he will stand by banning Madonna from his CNN talkshow because he finds her "annoying".

While being interviewed on Conan, the Piers Morgan Tonight host described Madonna's British accent as "terrible" and suggested that the American public is no longer fascinated by the 'Miles Away' singer.

"She's just so bloody annoying, isn't she?" he said. "I think I've got the pulse of the nation [by banning her from my television show]."

Old Lady/ Fashion

oldlady> Lourdes cringes as Madonna shows off her butt cheeks on the red carpet

> Is Madonna Too Old to Wear a See-Through Skirt?

In her prime, Madonna would hardly have gotten a sidelong glance if she'd bared her bottom at a high-profile party. But at 52, with her daughter at her side, the look raised more than a few eyebrows.

Madge was seen strutting her stuff at a Vanity Fair post-Oscar party on Sunday with Lourdes, her 14-year-old daughter. She not only showed off her rear under a lacy see-through skirt, but struck revealing poses whenever she got the chance.

Lourdes was understandably upset, and the Daily Mail reports that she was heard repeatedly saying, "Mum, do you have to?!" and "You tell me to behave like a grown-up!"

We're kind of surprised Lourdes isn't used to it by now. After all, it's not the first time Madonna has stepped out in something a little less than appropriate. Isn't she getting a little old for this?

> Madonna Is Annoying

[Piers Morgan on meeting Madonna about a year or two ago at some party:]

"This moment came at the Vanity Fair party where, in Madonna walks wearing clothes befitting a 17-year-old. It was just really awkward. I think she brought, Jesus, the 20-year-old boyfriend. Everything was awkward about this moment."

> Madonna berated at Oscar party!

Madonna is said to have embarrassed her daughter Lourdes on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscars party with her bottom revealing attire.

Madonna, 52, wore a black leotard and a few scraps of lace and a mortified Lourdes, 14, was heard pleading, "Mum, do you have to?!," every time the singer struck a pose and stuck her behind out for cameras.

In what looked like an attempt to shame her mother, Lourdes was also heard berating her. "But you tell me to behave like a grown-up."

The singer, who attended the bash at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, completed her outfit with fishnets and black platform stilettos.

> Britney Spears Beats Madonna As Ultimate Gay Icon

> Britney Spears 'voted ultimate gay icon' Digital Spy

Tuesday, February 15 2011
By Kristy Kelly

Britney Spears has been voted as the ultimate gay icon.

The 'Toxic' hitmaker took 31% of the vote, winning over the likes of US President Barack Obama and singer Cher in the Orange County Equality Project's poll to find the quintessential gay icon.

> Spears voted ultimate gay icon

> Fresh from her Grammys performance, the singer's [Gaga's] latest single looks likely to hit the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1.

Lady Gaga's much-hyped appearance at the 53rd Grammy Awards last night (13) added to its opening-weekend pop culture blitz.

By launching at No. 14, "Born" logs the second-highest start in the Pop Songs list's archives. Only Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" began at a higher rank, having soared in at No. 12 the week of Aug. 14, 1993. "Hold It Against Me" and Madonna's "Frozen" (March 7, 1998) follow with No. 16 arrivals. "Lady Gaga has quickly become one of the biggest stars in music," says MoJoe Roberts, program director of KHOP...

Answering the Apologists

Madonna's 1989 recording "Express Yourself" is a rip off of the 1970s "Express Yourself" song by Charles Wright (he even does a spoken bit towards the end):

Listen to Charles Wright: Express Yourself

Answering Madonna Supporters

So here are some of the latest headlines:

Lady Gaga> Did Lady Gaga Rip Off Madonna?

> Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' Is Madonna's 'Express Yourself,' Says Ryan Tedder

> Madonna's Brother Slams Lady Gaga as a Copycat

My view:

I neither hate nor like Lady Gaga (though I do find her a little annoying at times), so this is not coming from a Lady Gaga fan.

Lady Gaga's new song, "Born This Way" sounds nothing (NOTHING) like the Madonna-recorded "Express Yourself" song (from 1989).

Other than a spoken introduction, the two songs have nothing in common - the melodies differ, as do the lyrics.

Gaga's song does not even include a blaring horn section as does the Madonna-sung "Express Yourself," so if Gaga were truly ripping off "Express Yourself," that would be one element you'd expect to hear, but it's not there.

I can only guess that so many people were confronted by non-stop pro-Madonna media coverage for so long that they have come to judge any and all new female entertainers through a Madonna-tainted prism, because they're under this mistaken idea that Madonna is the premiere, only, or best female pop singer to ever exist.

(And as though Debbie Harry, Janet Jackson, Kristine W., Kylie Minogue, Pat Benatar, and Cyndi Lauper never existed.)

So it's not terribly surprising that anytime Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, (or whomever the latest popular female singer is), relase an album that they, or their work, gets compared to Madonna's. However, it remains incredibly annoying.

It's become the default, knee-jerk reaction to compare and judge all new female singers by Madonna, which is unfortunate.

The same people who are complaining that Gaga has ripped off "Express Yourself" conveniently seem to forget that Madonna has ripped off plenty of things herself, from other people's music, to their fashions and hair styles.

I'm not sure who has songwriting credit for "Express Yourself," but I seriously doubt that it's Madonna; at the very least, she probably has co-writer credit, which means someone else did the lion's share of the work on the song, not Madonna.

Compare Madonna's "Express Yourself" to the 1970s hit song "Express Yourself" by Charles Wright:

Charles Wright: Express Yourself

I hear plenty of similarities between the two, so I believe whomever wrote the Madonna version was ripping off (or, from their view, 'paying tribute to') the Wright version.

Where's the outrage over the Madonna song ripping off the Wright song?

And let's not forget:

MADONNA CONDONES PLAGIARISM

10/07/2006 19:56 | Pop icon MADONNA has no qualms about stealing ideas from other artists because she insists it's an acceptable part of the creative process.

JESSICA SIMPSON and PARIS HILTON have both been criticised recently for releasing songs that are reminiscent of Madonna's early hits, but she claims it's perfectly normal.

Madonna explains, "(Inspiration) is about paying attention. For instance, I saw DAVID LaCHAPELLE's movie RIZE, and it has incredible dancers in it. "I found out who the dancers were and put them in my next video. I have an insatiable hunger and curiosity to find out about new things. "Inevitably those things find their way into my work. I think that's what we do as artists and creative people - we're all plagiarising!"

[There's a difference between being "inspired" by someone or something else and ripping them off. Madonna has never made the distinction]

Updates

Edit.

The idiocy continues. Many more articles and editorials have appeared today arguing that Gaga's "Born This Way" is a clone of Madonna's "Express Yourself," though the two songs don't sound alike.

During the Grammy televised program, Gaga said her inspiration for the "Born This Way" song was Whitney Houston, not Madonna.

Furthermore, Gaga credited Whitney Houston – not Madonna – as her source of inspiration for the [Born This Way] song.

"I want to say thank you to Whitney Houston," she [Lady Gaga] told the audience while accepting the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album... "When I wrote 'Born This Way' I imagined you were singing it because I wasn't secure enough to see myself as a superstar."

> Madonna facing Mercy family lawsuit?

Sunday, February 6 2011,
By Daniel Sperling, Entertainment Reporter
The family of Madonna's adopted daughter Mercy James are reportedly planning to sue the star for reneging on a visitation deal.

The 'Celebration' singer, who took on the five-year-old from a Malawi orphanage in 2009, is believed to have promised Mercy's biological relatives regular contact following her adoption, but has yet to set up a reunion despite making two subsequent visits to the country with Mercy.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Emmie Chanika of Malawi civil rights group CILIC confirmed that Mercy's family had contacted her about launching a legal challenge against Madonna.

She said: "Mercy’s family have met me several times over the past year and they have been very upset. They have a strong recollection of being told that they would be able to see Mercy and have regular contact with her - and that when she is an adult she will return to live with them in Malawi."

"I believe they have a case in law because there appears to have been a verbal contract between them and Madonna’s representatives... None of us desires an embarrassing and expensive court case which could humiliate or inconvenience Madonna. The best outcome would be a proper agreement to let Mercy meet her family on a regular basis."

In addition to the lawsuit, Mercy's grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa has publicly pleaded with Madonna to let her see the child she cared for as a baby.

"We live a very simple life with little money and we felt [Mercy] would be better in the orphanage for her first few years," she explained.

"We know Madonna gave a lot of money to the orphanage, and the people there persuaded us to let her have our child. But she cannot love Mercy more than I love her, that is not possible. We are just asking her to be humane."

Referring to one of Madonna and Mercy's recent returns to Malawi, Chekechiwa's son Peter Baneti stated: "We had been visiting Mercy regularly and we never wanted her to leave us and her country behind.

"But we were told she had a chance of a good life with this singing star who would make sure she never lost touch with her African roots. We feel cheated, and my elderly mother is very upset."

Looking Unattractive/ Slams and Put Downs

UglyWhile I'm delighted to see this Anderson woman stating the obvious (Madonna looks too manly, too muscular), I don't ever remember Madonna's body looking "feminine," not even during the years she was using Anderson as her trainer.

> Madonna's former trainer slams star

> Meaty Madge blasted by trainer

Madonna's former trainer has slammed the Queen Of Pop for bulking up.

Tracy Anderson claims she invested years helping the singer get a more feminine frame, and is aghast to see her ex client exhibiting bulging muscles again.

The fitness expert - who's worked with JENNIFER ANISTON, GWYNETH PALTROW and NAOMI CAMPBELL - has spoken out against the singer to assure potential clients she's not in the business of turning toned and svelte women into muscly hulks.

She said: "I reversed the years Madonna spent getting bulky and made her more feminine, but I think she's going back the other way now.

"You just have to look at any of the other women I work with and you can see that's not what my method produces."

Tracy was introduced to Madge by Oscar winner Gwyn in 2006, but stopped working with the Material Girl three years later.

And she doubts the pair will ever be pals again.

She added: "Will we ever be friends again? That's a tough question. I don't have rivals in life, it's not who I am. I try to be a good person and I give a lot.

"Some people appreciate that and use it for the right reasons, and some people take from it.

"I've worked for over a decade to come up with something that's my own work and my own invention and my own blood, sweat and tears.

"I think that's where the biggest sore spot is. I like to invent things and she likes to reinvent them!"

Madonna is Creepy, Says Her Brother Christopher Ciccone

Book: Life With My Sister Madonna I do not agree with Christopher Ciccone's recent comments about Lady Gaga (Gaga, contrary to what he is saying, is not a Madonna clone per se. Lady Gaga is more of an eccentric, wacky performer like the ones from the 1970s and early 1980s, such as Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, or Grace Jones, more so than a vulgar sex kitten like Madonna), but I can't find much else to argue with about his comments.

....But Madonna's brother Christopher Ciccone isn't holding back on his opinion of her current dating choices.

The best-selling author of Life With My Sister Madonna is concerned with how young the singer's boyfriends are, and finds her behaviour worrying.

'I guess if she continues to date all these much younger guys, it could start to look creepy,' Christopher told Radar Online.

'But I think that a lot of Madonna's emotional needs are met by taking care of her children; these boyfriends must really be like a kind of distraction for her.

'She certainly isn't following societal values, but then again my sister never has and probably never will either.'

Madonna, 52, is currently dating French dancer Brahim Zaibat, 24.

Shock for villagers forced to move out to make way for girls' school as plan is axed

....Now local elders have accused Madonna of letting them down, and the Malawi government has been forced to admit it does not know what her plans are, after she announced that the academy had been scrapped.

....The news has come as a bombshell to villagers who surrendered their ancestral land to make way for the school. The Malawian government said it had not been consulted and will now summon the 52-year-old singer to explain herself.

........Chinkhota became a building site -but without a building. Construction of the academy was delayed over a dispute between the Raising Malawi charity and villagers who claimed they were not adequately compensated for land.

Desperate> 'When Madonna sees the show, she'll realise the unsettling truth that she's yesterday's news'

15th January 2011
[by Piers Morgan]

My decision to unilaterally ban Madonna from my new CNN show - on the grounds that she is far more boring and considerably less talented than her new, young doppelganger Lady Gaga - has continued to attract considerable attention in America.

So I decided to put my theory to the test on national TV tonight.

During an appearance on Chelsea Lately - Chelsea Handler is a wild, crazy, hilarious blonde who hosts a comedy talk show - I asked the studio audience how many of them would rather I interviewed Madonna over Gaga, and not a single person put their hand up or uttered a word. Just total dismissive delicious silence.

Then I reversed the question and they all burst into loud cheering.

Madonna obviously thought she was being very clever by reacting to my ban by saying she'd never heard of me.

But when she sees the clip of that audience, she's going to realise that there may be a rather unsettling truth to my assertion that she is yesterday's news.

Slams and Put Downs > Madonna's former trainer Tracy Anderson hits out at singer for opening her own gym

She [Anderson] also used to train Madonna but she isn't impressed that she has opened her first Hard Candy Fitness gym in Mexico.

Speaking to Britain's Star magazine, Anderson said: 'I knew she was going to be doing it.

'I could put my name on a gym and put them all over the world if I wanted to, but that would be irresponsible to what I do.

'I think we all know when a celebrity is going to do something that is in an industry that they're not in, they're just doing an endorsement and that's fine.

'But I think that you wouldn't want to go to a man who plays a doctor on TV to get prescribed something, would you?'

Madonna parted ways with Anderson, who was credited with sculpting Madonna's age-defying body, in 2009 after three years.

> Why Piers Morgan Banned Madonna From His CNN Show

British comic Piers Morgan first took a dig at the Material Girl last week at CNN's Television Critics Association Winter 2011 Session when he referred to her as "an irritant in my life for 20 years." He added that the only way she would be invited to be a gust on his show is if she "made the apology on CNN."

What started the feud between the 45-year-old America's Got Talent judge -- who replaces Larry King on January 17 -- and the 52-year-old pop star?

"Madonna and I, we've never really seen eye-to-eye," Morgan tells Access Hollywood. "There was a bread roll throwing incident in London in the mid '90s; there was an incident at a hotel in the south of France at the Cannes Film Festival involving a photographer and a bodyguard; there's been an incident involving a pub owned by her recently departed husband, Guy Ritchie, where my brother was the manager."

But according to Morgan, his biggest gripe with Madonna stems from a missed opportunity when he was a print journalist in London.

"You know the worst thing Madonna did to me? Madonna's publicist once said to me, 'Listen to me, Madonna is not pregnant,' when I was running a newspaper. And I said, 'Are you sure?' She said, 'Listen to me, Piers. Madonna is not pregnant,'" he recalls. "The next day, they announced it on a rival newspaper's website. There's a series of crimes."

What would it take for Morgan to drop his grudge against the "Hung Up" singer?

"The only way she can come back is to literally get on bended knee in somewhere like Times Square on national television and beg me for forgiveness," he says.

Word is that Madonna was "not be pleased" over the rumor that her entourage was getting paid to take her to Aura so frequently. A source said once a member of her crew was handed an envelope containing £10,000 for bringing Madonna to the club.

The insider added, "He struck a deal with Aura. It was agreed that if he brought Madonna down he would be paid £10,000."

It's said her head dancer was given the money to bring Madonna and 15 other dancers to the club.

As some on the left try to politicize the Gabrielle Giffords tragedy in Tucson, it would be wise for them to go back and examine some of the toxic words that have emanated from their own side of the political aisle.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Madonna, while on her Sticky & Sweet Tour, decided to add a few political rants to her musical mix. Sarah Palin, the then-GOP nominee for vice president, was the object of Madonna's disaffection.

The singer threatened to "kick her ass."

When confronted with her contentious statement at a red carpet premiere, Madonna dismissed the language. "It's a metaphor," she said."She's in the Republican Party; I'm in the Democratic Party."

The young child is on stage and dancing about in an over the top gold fashion that was once on Madonna and definitely idolizes sexuality. Wearing the coned outfit, to the delight of the audience, she prances around stage showing off as she has to extend her hands around the cones.

This is exploitation to a child in every capacity. It isn’t the first time either; online there are videos of this child wearing the outfit at different time.
